This morning I heard an interview with Warren Buffet about his giving away 80% of his wealth – billions of dollars – for the good of others – for the developing world.
What a wonderful thing to do. He’s keeping billions anyway so he and his family will want for nothing while being able to do something truely impressive.
I think it would be an amazing thing to be able to donate significant wealth for the care and betterment of others, to make a real difference in the world. But that is not for the majority of us to do. What we can do is bit by bit with our volunteer work, how we live our daily lives and giving the regular 10% of our incomes to charity.

do you donate 10% of your income to charity?
Between volunteer work, donations from sales from my business, Christmas Wishing Trees gifts, Canned food donations and straight cash donations I think it would be about 10%, maybe more or less some years but roughly yes.
I think it is important to realise that giving back to our community isn’t just possible in one format. There are heaps of ways to contribute and it is really easy for each of us to do so.
Australia has the highest volunteer contribution rate in the world, we wouldn’t have half our community organisations, eg. bush fire groups, life savers, SES, if it wasn’t for our volunteers. Just look at what happened with the US cyclone and the lack of help. With our volunteers we would (and did with Cyclone Larry) have a very different result on a human level.
Charity – giving to others in our community – covers a lot of options. What about the people who provide 4 – 10 hours a week to their community group? Their time is valuable and that many hours would easily add up to the equivelant of 10% of income.
But for me, I do a mixture. I think the vast majority of us do. 🙂
