Hey there,

Along the theme of the last few weeks here’s info about the ever popular Pearls.

Pearls

Pearls are organic gemstones, meaning they are grown. Pearls are formed in shellfish like oysters and mussels around an irritant that has got inside the shell. The pearls are formed around the irritant by layers of arragonite, known as nacre, to protect the shellfish. When pearls are grown on purpose by the insertion of an irritant they are known as cultured pearls. Most pearls available are cultured freshwater or saltwater varieties.

Pearls symbolise lasting love and happiness, which is why they are the traditional choice for presents.

Although pearls can come in a wide range of shades, the major colour classifications are white, pink, silver, cream, gold and black. Finer quality pearls have an overtone, which usually appears toward the outside edge of the pearl. This can be rose, green or blue. Regardless of the colour or shading, you should look for pearls with a deep, rich colour that seems to come from within the gem.

Pearls are associated with June birthdays, 3rd Year Anniversaries and 30th Pearl Jubilee.
